Vaultwarden

Vaultwarden, the secure, open-source password manager that you can self-host on your own private server.

Having a good password manager is absolutely essential not only to make your digital life easier, but also to protect your online accounts.

This is true whether you are a small entity (even just one person) or a larger organisation.

There’s no shortage of options on the market, and your web browser will almost certainly offer to save your passwords locally for you.

Although this last option is very convenient, it does not meet certain needs, particularly in terms of collaboration (shared vaults) or independence from a specific browser.

Why choose Vaultwarden?

Good password management software should be:

  • open-source: you wouldn’t want to store data as valuable as your passwords in a programme whose source code isn’t open.
  • secure: the code and the use of the software in question must have been audited by security experts.
  • packed with useful features: shared vaults, 2FA, passkeys, identity storage, bank cards, SSH keys, secure text and file sharing, on-the-fly generation of aliases and passwords, multi-device synchronisation, etc.

Bitwarden meets all these criteria. Bitwarden offers to host your data on its US or European servers, and has paid plans available.

You can also self-host the community version of Bitwarden, known as Vaultwarden, and thus enjoy the main premium features on your own server, with no user limits and at no extra cost.

This is the solution I recommend, and you can make use of it by deploying it on your own server.

How do you migrate your data to Vaultwarden?

Are you currently using another solution to store your passwords, such as 1Password, KeePass, or simply your web browser?

You can easily import all your passwords into your Vaultwarden account in just a few clicks.

Create shared vaults to allow your colleagues or family to access certain online credentials.

Resources are available to help you complete this step with confidence and start using your new private Vaultwarden instance to manage all your passwords straight away.

Some great premium features

As mentioned above, Vaultwarden offers Bitwarden’s premium features as standard.

This will enable you to assess the condition of your safe, identify any weaknesses and rectify them easily.

You’ll also be able to save two-factor authentication codes (or simply scan the QR code displayed on the settings page with a single click), create passkeys, and much more.

Your software costs more than you think.

FAQ
